Links for readers:
- If you’re in a book club, download a Reading Group Guide (pdf) for Sometimes That Happens With Chicken.
- Organize your book list and network with other readers on Goodreads and Shelfari.
- Subscribe to Electric Literature – A literary magazine with a mission to use new media and innovative distribution to return the short story to a place of prominence in popular culture. I LOVE these guys!
Links for writers:
- I recommend the following two authors on self-publishing:
- Aaron Shepard got me started down the self-publishing path. He’s a very useful resource and I specifically recommend Aiming At Amazon – the book that got me started.
- I learned about Morris Rosenthal from Aaron Shepard. Check out his blog Self Publishing 2.0 and his book Print-on-Demand Book Publishing.
- I recommend the following two books on publicity:
- Plug Your Book! – by Steve Weber
- Red Hot Internet Publicity: An Insider’s Guide to Promoting You Book on the Internet – by Penny C. Sansevieri
- Subscribe to Lynda.com to learn how to do anything with a computer. It’s not free, but it’s well worth the money.
- Subscribe to the Visual Thesaurus, if only for fun. There is an annual fee, but this is the most fun you can have with a thesaurus.
- Jim Felici’s book, The Complete Manual of Typography, is a must read for any one publishing anything.
My heroes:
I have lots of heroes and they haven’t all written books, but the list of heroes below have inspired me and given me hope on my publishing journey.
- Jeff Jarvis: I was inspired by his book What Would Google Do? At the very least, it will make you think. Also check out his blog – BuzzMachine.
- Glenn Reynolds: The title of his book explains why he’s one of my heros – An Army of Davids: How Markets and Technology Empower Ordinary People to Beat Big Media, Big Government, and other Goliaths. Also check out his blog – Instapundit.
- Seth Godin: He has written a long list of business books. My favorite so far is Small Is the New Big.
- Richard Branson: He is an entrepreneurial hero of mine. I recommend his book Losing My Virginity: How I’ve Survived, Had Fun, and Made a Fortune Doing Business My Way.
- Duff Goldman: I love his cakes and his TV series Ace of Cakes, but more than that, I like the way does business. When he got out of pastry school, he decided to hire all his friends and do it his way, and it worked – I love that!
- Aaron Shepard: Since his book Aiming at Amazon got me started, he will always have a special place in my heart.
- Paulo Coelho: I loved his novel The Alchemist as much as the other 65 million people who read it, but Coelho is one of my heroes because of the way he embraces technology. I enjoy his blog posts and his tweets. And Jeff Jarvis calls Coelho one of the “googliest” authors writing today.
- Rober Kalin: The founder of Etsy has changed the landscape of independent entrepreneurship, providing a distribution structure for a world of artists and crafters. God bless him!
- Nancy Amanda Redd: I met Nancy at a publishing panel discussion. Her book should be an inspiration to all but I was particularly inspired by the way she bucked the tide and insisted on using photographs of real women in her book. She leveraged craigslist to find real women and refused to dilute her concept. Every girl and woman should own Body Drama: Real Girls, Real Bodies, Real Issues, Real Answers.
- Andy Hunter & Scott Lindenbaum: I already got in one plug for Electric Literature but I can’t help myself. Editors of a quarterly anthology of five top-notch short stories, delivered in every viable medium, Andy and Scott have bolstered my confidence since their debut. And their bio on Twitter says, “Saving literature one reader at a time.” IMO it doesn’t get any better than that!

The following blogs have interested me in one way or another. I could say a few words about each of these blogs, but there are too many great blogs out there. You’ll have to see for yourself.
